Originally built in 1967 by I.M. Pei, the Department of Chemistry's Dreyfus Building underwent a 132,000 square foot restructuring to install state-of-the-art research labs, modernize safety and environmental systems, and capitalize on flexible spacing to allow reconfiguration as needs evolve. The 2003 renovation by Goody Clancy increased natural light while preserving building integrity. In 2004, R&D magazine named the project the "renovated laboratory of the year" citing energy efficient windows and facade alterations. The Associated General Contractors of America also awarded the building the Merit Award building Renovation in the same year.
